I have not written a poem since I was in school, at least 15 years ago, but for some reason when browsing Twitter this morning, and noting it was National Poetry Day, a part of me decided now was the time to look at creating within this art form once more.
This years topic is 'Water', and whilst walking my dog, jotting the lines onto my iPhone as they came into my mind, this is what I came up with. I hope you enjoy:
As I feel the splash on my face,
The saltiness fills my mouth allowing me to taste
The silent killer, one that shows no mercy or remorse
No regret, no joy, merely running its course.
The ice cold sensation shocks my body to the core
My life is only one, she has taken countless more
I struggle to breath, but water ignores my plea
Flowing as strong as ever, whether river, lake or sea.
The light within me fades, the bells of life ring out their final chime
Nothing can stop her, even ice can only bide her time.
Water, water everywhere; now my time is done
My soul taken, I won’t be the only one.
